Bro Coach Kenneth Carter: 49 Years of Community Service
He is a native of Marietta, and is the youngest of four boys, born to
the late Oscar and Sarah Carter. He became an advocate for physical
fitness early in life. He began his formal fitness development in high
school, where he participated in basketball, football, track, and
boxing. He received the State Flyweight Golden Glove Championship while
in high school. He received his B.S. Degree from Lincoln University, in
Missouri; M.A. Degree from Indiana University; Specialist Degree from
Jacksonville State in Alabama; and B.A. Degree from Atlanta University.
He served in the United States Marine Corp for three years. While
serving, he was on the football and boxing teams.
In the sixties, he began his profession as a Physical Education
Director at the Butler St. YMCA, in Atlanta, GA. He transported youth
each Saturday, from Marietta, to the YMCA in Atlanta, so they could
participate in the physical activities, because, there were no
available facilities for youth in Marietta. A couple of the trainees at
the YMCA in Atlanta were Martin Luther King, Jr. and Andrew Young.
In 1962, Coach Carter began his career, teaching Physical Education and
Health, and coaching in the Marietta City School System. He coached
football, basketball, and track for several years at Marietta Middle
School. He coached tennis for 19 years at Marietta High School. While
coaching the Marietta Tennis Team, he had a record of 16 consecutive
wins, one State Championship, and nine region championships. He was
chosen as the Georgia Tennis Coach of the Year. He was presented an
award by Arthur Ashe, at Forrest Hills, as one of the top Tennis
Coaches of the Year, in the nation. Coach Carter and the 1985 tennis
team were inducted into the Marietta High School Hall of Fame, in 2007.
One of the greatest achievements in his career was organizing
and developing the ‘Jump Rope Movement Program’. This program was a
part of his physical education fitness program. Out of this program
came the original “Blazing Rope Jumpers”. This group performed
nationwide, at NBA games, schools, PE conferences, television, and for
many other organizations. During the Wayne Williams missing children
crises, he developed and was the Director of the summer enrichment
program for disadvantaged youth in Metro Atlanta. This program was
sponsored by Lockheed Aircraft and continued for several summers. More
than two hundred children participated in the program.
Coach is a member of Turner Chapel AME Church, Marietta, where he has
been active for several years. He served as Superintendent of Sunday
School for 22 years, tutored and drove the Church bus for the tutorial
program for more than 20 years; a Trustee, a member of the Sons of
Allen and the Food Ministry. He is an active member of the Chi Gamma
Gamma chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Cobb County NAACP, GAHPERD,
and NAHPERD. He received awards for Outstanding Man of the Year from
the Marietta Jaycees; Outstanding Service Award from GAHPERD; Teacher
of the Year from Marietta Middle School and Marietta City Schools. He
is married to Jeanie Martin Carter. They have one son (Marcus), and one
daughter (Kennetta). They have four granddaughters (Carisse, Crystal,
Chelsa, and Casey).
